North Carolina Spiders

If there are any Raleigh, NC pests that strike fear in homeowners more than spiders, I have yet to hear about them. Spiders bear a negative reputation stemming from the very venomous Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders. The truth is most spiders are very shy. Encounters with a spider are usually unintentional and in some cases unavoidable. They only bite when they feel threatened, or as a means of self defense. Most spider bites are equivalent of a bee sting or a fire ant bite in terms of pain. Unless someone suffers from specific allergies, very few species of spiders have the ability to produce dangerous side-effects. Below is chart demonstrating which spiders Raleigh, NC residents need to be worried about, and which spiders are low risk.

Note: The Hobo Spider is no longer considered as dangerous as the Brown Recluse or Black Widow

Spider Bite Treatment

If you are bitten by one of the non-dangerous spiders in the above chart, there are a few steps you should take to heal and avoid infection. After bitten by a non-venomous spider, wash the bite with warm soapy water. Apply an ice pack to the affected area to avoid any inflammation. Doctors do not recommend using an antibiotic unless the spider bite leads to a bacterial infection. Antihistamines and antiseptics are both okay in treating a spider bite.

If you happen to be bitten a venomous Black Widow or Brown Recluse, stay calm and seek medical help immediately. Remaining calm aids in decreasing your blood pressure and heart rate which may already be high because to the spider’s poisonous venom. Keeping your blood pressure and heart rate low will restrict the spread of the spiders’ venom throughout the body. A bite from one of these poisonous spiders can rapidly become an urgent medical emergency.

Spider Control Tips

  • Remove all insects, both living and dead, from your property the best you can. Spiders will not make webs near your home if there are few insects for them to eat.
  • Keep your home and property clean and clutter free. Garages, basements, tool sheds, and other cluttered areas are a spider’s favorite hang out.
  • Avoid rock piles and stacking wood near your home. These tend to be breeding grounds for spiders.
  • Thoroughly remove any cobwebs or egg sacs you see inside your home or around your property with a broom or vacuum with a tightly sealed vacuum bag.
  • Install door sweeps and snug-fitting screens on all windows and doors to keep the spiders out of your home.
  • When storing things in garages or basements, make sure they are in tightly sealed plastic containers or tubs. If you are storing things in boxes, make sure each edge is completely sealed by packing tape to keep spiders from entering.
  • Seal any crevices or cracks that a spider might use to enter your home. Doing so will also prevent other insects in which spiders eat from coming inside and attracting spiders. Remember, spiders can enter through an opening 1/16th of an inch wide.
  • Yellow sodium vapor lights installed outside will attract fewer moths and insects that spiders usually eat.
